It looks as though Kyuss our corn snake, could be shedding his skin.

Snakes shed their skins as they grow. A sure sign is when their eyes turn a milky white/blue and their skin becomes opaque or their colours dim. They go off their food at times and can be a bit more of a handful when handling (grumpy:). Although we have not yet seen the milky eyes, which can look quite scary, his underside definitely has a milky tint to it, and therefore it appears that he could be about to slough.

The build up to shedding takes a week to ten days, and about midway through, the snake will appear to return to normal. The eyes will clear, but the dullness of colour will remain. Do not be fooled – if you cannot find a shed skin in the enclosure, then the snake is still going through the process.

It is an amazing spectacle, to watch a snake shed. It does not harm the critter, although it can seem painful. It takes 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the size of the snake. They begin by rubbing their noses on something hard in their enclosure – a water bowl, a rock, etc. Once the skin on their nose is broken, they continue to rub their faces until the freshly grown skin on their faces has peeled off. They then move around their enclosure and their natural body movement allows the skin to peel from the body. During this time the animal appreciates a large water bowl (soaking and softening the skin) and a little extra humidity, the extra moisture in the air aids the shedding process.

At the end of the process, you are left with a skin, that resembles the snake that has just slithered out of it!! If the snake is healthy, it will lose its skin in one whole piece. The skin is inside out, and you can clearly see the snake’s markings and eyes – a snake does not have eyelids but clear skin that covers the eyes (this is why the eyes turn milky) and the skin comes off during the shed. The snake is very tired when they have shed and may rest for a while afterwards. Due to the amount of energy that the process consumes, the snake will be very hungry afterwards, and will eat well.

You are also left with a snake, more beautiful than the one you saw prior to the shed – its colours will be more vibrant, its markings more pronounced and its eyes much brighter. Snakes are not only an amazing product of nature, but also truly beautiful animals to behold.
